Jesse Beacham Grijalva Prieto

ODEI Student Fellow and SAGE Fellow (El Centro)

Biography:

My name is Jesse Beacham Grijalva Prieto and my pronouns are they/them/theirs/he/him/his/el.
As well as an ODEI student fellow, I am a SAGE fellow associated with El Centro Academico
Cultural. The best way to contact me is through email or G-chat at jb493@humboldt.edu.
I am majoring in Psychology and minoring in Philosophy, my classes have largely emphasized
cultural diversity. Diversity, equity, and inclusion hold immense significance in my life, they form
the foundation of my understanding of self, the people in my immediate surroundings, and the
complex dynamics of the country I call home. Without these fundamental principles, I would
have struggled to understand human experiences, identities, and social structures that define
our world. These values have not only enriched my personal growth but have also empowered
me to contribute positively to fostering a more empowering and equitable society for all.
Before I was hired, I dedicated a significant amount of my professional time to discussing some
of the adverse experiences of students/faculty who identify as BIPOC and/or 2SLGBT+ with

faculty, students, and non-students in the community of Humboldt. During these discussions,
we’d frequently brainstorm ways that these experiences could be mitigated or even better,
erased altogether. However, my position as a student didn’t provide me with adequate
resources to follow through while maintaining a sustainable lifestyle. Now that I work with ODEI,
my goal is to be a voice, provide resources for, and to facilitate students in their ability to
advocate for themselves in multiple contexts (medical, academic, and career), using language
that is both assertive and empathetic.
